Single Image Random Dot Stereogram ANImator V1.1 description

This program reads objects files that contain the geometric information of a 3D object, in either x3d 2.0 or Wavefront object format. You select the view of the object, its orientation and scale, and an axis to rotate it around. The object is then turned into a series of SIRDSs which are then animated.

What are SIRDS (Single Image Random Dot Stereograms) ?

SIRDS are pictures of seemingly random dots that when viewed in the correct
way produce the impression of a solid object.

How do they work ?

When viewing a SIRDS correctly each side of the brain sees a slightly
different pattern. The small shifts in the pattern that makes up a SIRDS
image are interpreted by the brain as different heights. The same mechanism
in the brain that allows us to see SIRDS, also allows us to judge the
distance of objects close to us accurately.

What does this program do ?

This program reads objects files that contain the geometric information
of a 3D object, in either x3d 2.0 or Wavefront object format. You select
the view of the object, its orientation and scale, and an axis to rotate
it around. The object is then turned into a series of SIRDSs which are
then animated.

What is the x3d 2.0 object format ?

x3d is a program created by Mark Spychalla, which display 3d objects
on Xwindows UNIX machines. There are comments in the x3d files that
enable the format of them to easily decoded. The general idea is the
points make up line segments that make up polygons.

Where can I get more objects ?

There is a large collection of objects at avlon.chinalake.navy.mil. The
registered version comes complete with over 1.5MB of free public domain
objects.
