MADPLAY - An MPEG audio player for PC/LINUX description
Has the source to the original MAPLAY utility and the source for the MSDOS port is available upon request.
MAPLAY for PC
=============
Hi.. well here it is, the realtime full quality MPEG audio decoder for MSDOS.
Please remember, this is a test release only, so I'd like to get some
feedback from you to see on what kind of machines it runs on.
Requirements to run the program:
- A soundblaster or compatible. Make sure your SB parameters are stated
in the BLASTER environment variable. NOTE: some 8 bit soundblasters don't
report the correct DSP version.. maplay will not work on those. (like the
soundblaster I have in my laptop)
- A copro. For one second of full quality mpeg audio the processor
has to do about 6 million floating point operations (my best guess :).
- Smartdrive (or any other caching program). DOS doesn't have
any buffering on file-handles and the MPEG stream is being read
in very small chunks, so to maximize speed you'll need smartdrive.
- MPEG layer 1 or 2 streams. (heh, you know where to get them)
I included all three flavours of MAPLAY in this archive so you can test all
of them. If your computer isn't fast enough to do stereo decoding, please try
using the -l or -r switches to decode mono. Using the -8 switch to output
8 bit sound doesn't speed up decoding.
Please let me know what computer you have and how MAPLAY performed on
your system.
The source of the original MAPLAY is included in the maply12.tar archive.
The source of the MSDOS port can be obtained by writing an email to
mikmak@stack.urc.tue.nl or mikmak@via.nl
DISCLAIMER: Use this program at your own risk. Don't drink & drive.
Just say no.
